"Need to make UiTM competitive, says Ka Ting"
THE intake for UiTM would help create a positive academic culture and enhance students’ competitiveness if made open to other communities, said MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting.
“Based on this principle, the government should consider rationally and objectively whether to open UiTM for non-bumiputras,” he said in his statement as quoted by China Press.
“MCA cannot agree to the statement that UiTM should continue to be monopolised by bumiputras,” Ong added.
Ong said MCA was involved in making a strategic government policy on allowing 10% of Matriculation courses and Maktab Rendah Sains Mara intake to be open to non-bumiputras in 2002 and 2004, respectively.
“The change of the policy then is a good beginning, and so we should consider opening the UiTM intake to other communities,” he said.
“All relevant parties should look at this issue with an open minded and be objective. Do not turn it into a racial issue.
“It will not help the nation's unity if we continue to petition based on racial sentiment,” he said.(The Star 15 Ogos 2008)
